  1.   I think it a great idea

    But peta won't

  2. They sort of do have that.  Each owner usually has more than one horse so their horses are part of their team.  Often you'll see two horses from the same owner in one race... they're doing "team" racing in a way.  Look at the Haskell at Monmouth a couple weeks ago... Coal Play and Cool Coal Man were from the same owner and trainer.  Coal Play was supposed to go out and set a fast pace in the race so that Cool Coal Man would have a better chance of running past Big Brown in the stretch.  The plan didn't exactly work, but it was the plan.  It's just like how Nascar has different racing teams and they will sometimes help each other get to the front to earn points.  The difference with horse racing is that you can't consolidate all the horse ownership into a few big teams because horse ownership is so expensive.

I see what you're saying and the idea is pretty cool... we could see 12 horses, one from each team, face each other every day and at the end see who has the most wins so which team has won the championship.  It's a neat idea, but the way the racing industry is set up, it just can't really work that way.
