Team Lotus, Renault GP wait on F1 commission decision regarding names change – Formula 1 news
Team Lotus and Renault request to the Formula 1 commission for name change has been put on hold, following request from Ferrari, Sauber and Hispania Racing Team.
The three teams propose that the matter should be taken up formally in a meeting.
A Formula 1 commission meeting will be held soon to look into this matter and decide whether the teams’ plan to change their names for 2012 should be given a green signal or not.
The commission comprises of 26 members and the teams need support from at least 18 members in order for the decision to turn out in their favour. The 26 members that make up the commission include, the Formula 1 Management chief Bernie Ecclestone, International
Automobile Federation (FIA) President Jean Todt, race promoters, engine manufactures and sponsors.
It has been reported that Team Lotus has opted for Caterham as its next choice of team name for the year 2012, while the Renault team looks to take its Lotus logo into the next year.
The proposed changes could have been made a lot earlier and only if Sauber, HRT and Ferrari had not intervened and asked for a clarification on the implication these changes might have. The members of Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA) have also clearly
expressed their support towards this which means implementing this any earlier would not have been much of an issue.
After Ferrari, Sauber and HRT’s demand that the matter should be discussed in the F1 commission meeting, Sauber chief Monisha Kaltenborn said that the issue will not be taken up until all the members get together.
“The name change is within the competence of the F1 Commission and I think we will deliberate it there,” Kaltenborn said, “We don't want to comment any more on that matter.”
The teams will have to decide whether they choose to abide by the decision of the majority vote at the next commission meeting or stick to their decision of names change and forego their television rights income. Both ways it is going to be their call, and
they will have to make a decision.
Let’s see what the outcome of the commission meeting is and what names do both the Lotus teams come up with in the 2012 Formula 1 season.
