Team Lotus’ Tony Fernandes buys the British sports car company Caterham – Formula 1 news
Recent reports have revealed that the team boss of Team Lotus Tony Fernandes has purchased the British sports car company, Caterham.
He stated that he had “an incredibly excitement announcement about the future of the team” a couple of days ago and it seems that according to the documents, Mr Anthony Francis Fernandes has been appointed as the director of the British sports car company
starting from April 12, 2011.
Team Lotus has not been able to perform as good as it expected since the beginning of the 2011 Formula 1 season as they have been unable to score a single point until now and on top of that, they are also struggling to make it to the Q2 session of the qualifying
round at each race weekend.
Other than that, both of the team drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli have not been able to give a good performance during the races either but similar to the team’s performance in 2010, they are still doing much better than Hispania Racing Team and
Virgin Racing Team.
HRT have been facing some problems to qualify as well as the International Automobile Federation (FIA) reintroduced the 107 percent rule system according to which each driver has to score a lap time during the qualifying session which cannot be slower than
a certain amount of lap time.
It was expected that the three new teams might face some problems regarding this rule but Team Lotus have been clear of this rule since the beginning of this season and it seems that they are hoping to improve their car as well in the near future in order
to achieve their goals this year.
The main reason for this news that Caterham has been bought by Lotus is that the sports car company was initially ‘born’ out of Lotus as a dealer of the legendary Lotus Seven. However, the company itself later on decided to purchase the rights in order to
continue manufacturing since Lotus decided to stop back in 1973.
Caterham currently has just one car at present which is known as the Caterham 7 and it is considered as a direct evolution of Lotus.
