Team Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen admits they were too optimistic about their 2011 run – Formula 1
Team Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen has recently admitted that the team was a bit too optimistic about its chances in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
“I think they [the targets] were too optimistic. With the tools we have at the moment, we can't expect to be fighting with the middle of the pack or with teams like Renault or Mercedes,” he told the media.
Team Lotus have not been able to score a single point finish after their return in 2010 and they are still struggling at the back of the grid alongside teams like Virgin Racing Team and Hispania Racing Team.
Other than that, he added that the team should improve its facilities in order to improve its car and gain more accurate data.
“I think it's not good enough yet, it's one area that we need to improve for the future. We know that because the main reason is that the facility that we have is not good enough yet, it's not big enough,” said Kovalainen.
Kovalainen is one of those drivers who were awarded with a great car during its prime but he still was not able to score good results. The Finn driver became a part of McLaren after Fernando Alonso left in 2008. During the 2009 season, his teammate Lewis
Hamilton secured the drivers’ title while Heikki himself finished in 7th place in the drivers’ standings with just 53 points as a result of which McLaren were unable to secure the constructors’ title.
After the 2009 Formula 1 season, Kovalainen had to leave McLaren as he was unable to secure any good results for the team and joined Team Lotus in 2010 for their debut season.
Team Lotus have been striving to score good results in the sport as they have been aiming to become a mid-running team of Formula 1. Let’s see how they fare in the remainder of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
