Team Lotus hoping to score points after applying car upgrades at Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1
Team Lotus have said that they are going to apply a major upgrade to their car at the Spanish Grand Prix after which the new car will help their drivers finish amongst points in the ongoing 2011 Formula 1 season.
The team has been struggling to perform so far even though they were expecting a lot from their new car.
Lotus are still the best of the worst at the moment as they are far better than the other new entrants, Hispania Racing Team and Virgin Racing Team. However, they so far seem unable to challenge the mid-running teams of the sport.
However, one has to admit that they are closing in on them to some extent in terms of pace and since the team finished ahead of a struggling Team Williams recently, they are now even more optimistic about their chances in the future.
Williams, Force India, Sauber and Red Bull Toro Rosso are still looking much stronger than Lotus but the 2011 Formula 1 season is only three races old and they still have a chance to fight back.
According to Mike Gascoyne, the technical director of Lotus, the rear of the car will be upgraded significantly and it is expected that this update will give the team a boost into the top 10.
“With the three races coming up our major update will come at Barcelona, which will be a major update to the diffuser and rear end of the car - it will bring quite a lot of performance to the car,” Gascoyne said in a team video. “I think if we look at scoring
points we have to look at Barcelona onwards, I think the updates to the car are going to be very significant.”
He added that the team still needs to focus on the upcoming races and they are heading towards the right direction. However, Mike insisted that the team has got rid of its tyre warm-up problems in cooler conditions.
“It's always quite an intense time to get everything freighted out to those flyaway races and it's difficult to get many updates on the car. I think in general we are reasonably pleased,” he stated.
Let’s see if Team Lotus can put up a better display at the upcoming Turkish Grand Prix which is scheduled for May 8, 2011.
