Team Lotus’ principal Tony Fernandes inspired by Red Bull Racing history – Formula 1 news
Tony Fernandes, the team principal of Formula 1 team Lotus has said that the history of Red Bull Racing team is quite inspirational for him.
Surprisingly though, Red Bull do not have a very long history as they have been in the sport for only 7 years.
Team Lotus returned to the sport in 2010 after almost 16 years but unfortunately, were unable to continue their legacy. They have won 7 titles but their current performance is nowhere near the front running teams of Formula 1.
The team used Cosworth engines in its debut year after returning to the sport but in 2011, the team decided to shift to Renault engines and it seems that their performance has improved quite noticeably this year.
On the other hand, Red Bull Racing became a part of the sport back in 2005 after buying out Jaguar Racing Team and by the 2009 Formula 1 season, Red Bull were challenging for the titles alongside BrawnGP while Ferrari and McLaren failed to perform up to
the mark that year.
“The great thing, five years ago, Red Bull was in the position that we were in. In fact, they were a little bit of a head start because they bought an existing factory from Stewart (the team Jaguar took over), so they had quite a big head start, but they
were at the back and, five years later, they're world champions,” said Fernandes.
The Lotus team principal stated that he would like his team to progress in a similar way as well and maybe follow in Red Bull Racing team’s footsteps.
“We'd 100 per cent like to replicate [what Red Bull has done]. We're very encouraged by it. You know, in 18 months, we've built a factory from nothing. We put the car out in Bahrain after only eight months,” said the team boss.
One has to admit that Lotus are the best of the rest as they are much faster in terms of pace as compared to their current rivals Hispania Racing Team and Virgin Racing Team. However, they are yet to score a single point since their return.
