Team Mercedes denies rumours that they want to sign Sebastian Vettel for 2012
It was recently revealed that Sebastian Vettel wants to sign with a team like Ferrari or Mercedes soon as he believes that in order to ensure a secure career in Formula 1, he would need to sign with a more “reliable” team. Red Bull Racing Team secured both
drivers’ and constructors’ titles in 2010 after an exhilarating and dramatic season. They clearly had the best car on the grid but since the team became a part of the sport just 6 years ago, there is no proof or assurance that they will maintain their performance.
As a result, Luca di Montezemolo responded and said that Ferrari is looking forward to sign Sebastian Vettel in the near future. However, Team Mercedes did not issue any sort of statement and it seemed that they were not interested in signing the 2010 Formula
1 champion.
However, Helmut Marko claimed that Ferrari is trying to poach Red Bull staff and as a result, Mercedes is trying to make a move to sign Sebastian for the 2012 season.
“Mercedes for sure. Knowing that Sebastian has a contract with us, Mercedes expresses quite an interest in him,” said Marko when a reporter asked him who else is interested in signing Sebastian Vettel other than Ferrari.
This statement was turned down by Mercedes’ vice president Norbert Haug.
“We have exactly the drivers we wanted in Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg,” he told the media.
It is quite clear that since Mercedes has signed Michael and Nico for a long period, they want to get familiar with their driver’s likings and that requires time. Otherwise, they will not be able to provide their drivers with the best possible package.
He also stated that this statement is “absolutely wrong” and that he does not intend to offer Sebastian with a deal anytime soon.
Since Sebastian Vettel’s contract with Red Bull will come to an end after the 2011 Formula 1 season, it is expected that the young German might change his team by the end of this season if he is offered a good spot at either Ferrari or Mercedes.
It would be interesting to see how Red Bull Racing Team performs this year as it is believed that they will once again be one of the top running teams since they still have Adrian Newey; their technical director, by their side.
