Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step undergoes a hard training camp in Slovakia
Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step is undoubtedly one of the strongest World Tour teams in the peloton, and to ensure that it keep track of its performance, the team has already started training for the season ahead.
The cyclists were tested both physically and mentally during a tough military style training in Lest, Slovakia.
Tony Martin and Peter Velits were impressed to see the motivation of all the cyclists and the staff members during the camp.
"We also got the chance to get to know our teammates and the newcomers better, in a context that was unfamiliar to all of us, a situation in which unity meant strength".
Tom Boonen could not make it thorough as the Belgian is still suffering from a stomach flu which ruined most of his 2012 season.
"I didn't know what to expect from these activities," he explained.
"I started out a little skeptical, but then my teammates got me involved, and I ended up having a lot of fun”.
“I'd like to thank all the personnel at the base, who were very professional but at the same time were really attentive to our needs”.
“All the activities, even the most challenging ones, were performed in complete safety under their reassuring, expert supervision".
Boonen made the major contribution and helped the team with 410 UCI points in the 2012 season.
Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step managed to claim the fourth overall position after the UCI World Tour Team’s rankings with a total number of 1162 UCI points. Team Sky claimed the top position with Team Katusha and Team Liquigas-Cannondale at the second and
the third positions.
Besides Boonen, Tony Martin (171 points), Niki Terpstra (160 points), Sylvain Chavanel (113 points) and Michal Kwiatkowski (108 points) also were brilliant all through the 2012 season.
Addition of Mark Cavendish has further strengthened the Belgian side after the Manxman negotiated himself out of the contract and joined the team for the season ahead.
Team Manager Wilfried Peeters was delighted after signing the former UCI Road World Champion and noted that his addition will definitely strengthen the team’s sprint department.
