Team Orica GreenEdge might employ some stage race professional for the 2013 season
Team Orica GreenEdge made the intentions clear during its inaugural year with targeting mainly the classics and the smaller races.
The team had to face the disappointment during its first Grand Tour race of the season, the Giro d’Italia 2012.
It finished at the bottom of the table after the final team’s classifications of the race.
Team Lampre-ISD takes the top spot with Team Movistar, Team Sky Procycling, Team Astana and Team Garmin-Barracuda holding the second, the third, the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
Japanese rider Fumiyuki Beppu was the team’s top contender after the final general classifications.
He finished 4:06:56 behind the leader Ryder Hesjedal and occupied the 121st overall position.
Jens Keukeleire finished at the 127th position while, Christian Meier (135) and Svein Tuft achieving the 148th position after the overall classifications.
The Australian team’s disappointing performance during the Giro d’Italia is an alarming situation for Sports Director Matt White to recruit more stage-race specialists for the coming season.
While talking to Cyclingnews White shared his concerns, "What we're looking for are people to fit into our work ethic and into our culture that we've created so far this year".
"We're looking for the right people – not the right points or the right results".
"We've got a very good group of guys with us at the moment and I think we've achieved a lot.
“We copped a lot of criticism for not having a GC guy this year but we've punched above our weight every race we've gone to really”.
“If we do come across a guy for next year then it will be the person who fits into our culture".
The WorldTour debutant side, Team Orica GreenEdge has performed beyond expectations in the 2012 season.
It has marked some tremendous performances right from the start of the season at the Santos Tour Down Under along with the Australian National Championships.
The team also succeeded during the Circuit Cycliste Sarthe, Volta Ciclista a Catalunya and the Milan-San Remo.
The only Grand Tour victory for the team came through the mighty Matt Goss during the stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia 2012.
