Team Orica-GreenEdge signs Sam Bewley for the remaining 2012 season
Team Orica-GreenEdge has further strengthened its squad for the 2012 season after signing the young New Zealander in its side.
The Australian side made the announcement after the retirement of its star rider Robbie McEwen.
Bewley started his professional pursuit in 2009 and has represented a number of teams throughout his career.
He rode for Team RadioShack through 2010-11 and penned a deal with Team BikeNZ PureBlack Racing for the initial part of the 2012 season.
The cyclist has already come into action at the Bayern-Rundfahrt but his final start with the team will be determined after the 2012 London Olympics.
Sam will represent New Zealand at the coming event and he is warming up for the biggest event of the season.
Team Sports Director Shayne Bannan has shown confidence in the young rider, "We weren't able to sign Sam until Robbie retired because we were maxed out on numbers".
He further added that, "This ended up working out well for both Sam and the team because of Sam's track schedule”.
“He has a lot of potential on the road when he's able to fully concentrate on road racing, and we're looking forward to helping him develop his complete potential”.
“We've signed him for this and the next season, and while we won't see him much this year, he'll be with us full-time on the road in 2013," he concluded.
Team Orica GreenEdge is marking its professional debut at the top level of the sport and has been impressive during the first half of the season.
Simon Gerrans helped the team with its first World Tour victory at the Santos Tour Down Under after he occupied the top podium spot at the Australian race.
Almost 90 % of the cyclists in the squad are Australian natives and Sam is amongst the only few non-Australians in the side.
The Kiwi has not raced since a long time and is all set to mark his professional debut with the new team.
Bewley noted that Team Orica GreenEdge has a number of top class cyclists in its squad and is determined to help the team in the remaining part of the season.
