Team Pacquiao not in the mood to beg for Marquez rematch – Boxing News
As Manny Pacquiao puts it, boxing is strictly business for him and his mates, and so there are no emotions attached. Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s friend and adviser, spoke to a Manila based sportswriter, saying that they are in no mood to beg team Marquez for
a rematch. According to Koncz, even though Pacquiao was knocked out, he was not proved inferior to Marquez. For Koncz, Pacquiao was leading the fight and just a one-punch knockout cannot prove Marquez is better than the Filipino fighter.
“There’s no rush to decide on anything,” said Koncz. “If they come to us with a reasonable offer, we can always entertain Marquez—as long as Marquez’s team doesn’t get a swollen head just because he knocked us out.
“I don’t think that losing is a key ingredient. It’s how you lost. We were winning every round of the fight. So if they come back to us now and say ‘We knocked you out, so we deserve the lion’s share,’ another fight will never happen again.”
Pacquiao was knocked out by Marquez in the sixth round of their fourth showdown which took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas past Saturday. It was a shocking defeat of the Pac-man who never lost to Marquez before.
Pacquiao still stands with two wins over Marquez, which means Marquez needs two more wins to prove he is better than the former WBO champion.
“We were dominating the fight but we give Marquez credit, he got Manny with a good punch,” said Koncz.
It should be noted here that Marquez is already talking about retirement. He was on the verge of retiring just when Pacquiao accepted his rematch offer and brought him back to the scenario. Now, the Mexican believes he has achieved what he was longing for.
If Marquez retires now, he will retire with a knockout win over the Pac-man while the latter has a unanimous decision and a split decision win.
The rivalry between Pacquiao and Marquez has already been rated as one of the best in the history of boxing, and analysts believe there is still a lot to it left.
