Team Serbia announces line-up for Davis Cup tie against Argentina – Tennis News
With a little more than a week left in their semi-final tie at the 2011 Davis Cup against Team Serbia announces its line-up that will take on Team Argentina. Scheduled for the third weekend of September, Serbia will play host to the Argentines as they continue their title defence at the Davis Cup.
Under the captaincy of Bodgan Obradovic, Team Serbia will include the likes of world number one Novak Djokovic, world number fifteen Viktor Troicki, world number twenty three Janko Tipsarevic and doubles specialist and current world number six, Nenad Zimonjic.
An almost unstoppable force in 2011, Djokovic is not the only Serb making the news these days. Jumping to twelfth position recently, Troicki became only the second Serb ever to be ranked in the top fifteen. Not far behind, Tipsarevic is also enjoying good form in the season so far. Albeit ranked outside the top twenty, Tipsarevic holds the honour of being the third Serb to be ranked inside the top fifty. The Serb also reached his career best at a Grand Slam this week when he moved into the quarterfinals of the 2011 US Open at Flushing Meadows after doing away with former world number one, Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Although Djokovic will be playing his first singles tie at the Davis Cup since December 2010 when he led Team Serbia to their maiden win, the team has not been without its stars. Troicki and Tipsarevic have more than made up for the Serbian juggernaut’s absence. Opening their title defence this year, Team Serbia enjoyed 4-1 victories in its ties against Team India in the first round and then over Team Sweden in the quarterfinal round.
As the team readies itself to play Argentina on the 16th of September, the match everyone looks forward to is the clash between the former world number four, Argentine giant Juan Martin Del Potro and the Serbian juggernaut. Given his current unstoppable form and DelPo’s recovery this season, the match is expected to be nothing short of fireworks.
In the other much awaited semi-final tie of the event, 2010 runner up Team France will take on the star-studded Team Spain featuring former world number one and King of Clay, Rafael Nadal.
