Team Serbia vs Team Argentina – Davis Cup 2011 World Group Play-offs Line-up
Davis Cup World Group play offs enter the semi-final round and the defending champion Team Serbia will take on the Argentine squad for a place in the final of the event. The much anticipated contest will be held from 16th to
18th of September on the hard courts of the Belgrade Arena, Belgrade, Serbia, with the top ranked local tennis starts moving on course to defend their titles in front of an always enthusiastic home crowd.
The teams making it to the final of the event will get their berths in the World Groups of the Davis Cup in 2012, while the rest of the teams will restart their campaigns next year from the Group 1. Serbia and Argentina will battle
it out extremely hard to won their tie and make an easy way to the World Group next season.
The Serbs have been holding the Davis Cup title for the past the past two years and have not been defeated since 2009, when Team Spain overwhelmed them in the opening round in Benidorm. The only meeting between Team Serbia and
Argentina was held way back in 1964, when the Serbs played under the flag of Yugoslavia to take down the Argentine squad.
Team Serbia is led by Bogdan Obradovic and consists of three of the top-20 tennis players of the world. World number one, Novak Djokovic will be the spearhead of his squad, along with the 16th ranked Viktor Troicki,
world number 20 Janko Tipsarevic and Nenad Zimonjic.
The Argentine team is captained by Tito Vazquez and the world number 18, Juan Martin Del Potro, will lead the attack from his side to hunt the mighty Serbs. World number 24, Juan Ignacio Chela, 36th ranked Juan Monaco
and the former world number three, David Nalbandian, are the other top Argentine tennis stars to compete in the semi-final tie.
The star-studded line up of Serbian squad makes it the hot favourite for the semi-final clash against the Team Argentina. The defending champions outplayed the Indian team 4-1, in the first round of the tournament to get their
winning momentum. The Serbs then disposed off a bleak Swedish line up, which was lacking the expertise of their number one player, Robin Soderling, in the quarter-final encounter comprehensively at 4-1 to reach the round of four.
Team Argentina has been on the roll as well and won its opening match 4-1 against Romania. The Argentines proved absolutely ruthless in the quarter-finals, devastating the Kazakh squad with the utmost authority, 5-0, to meet Serbia
in the semis.
The presence of the world number one, Djokovic, in the Serbian team is surely a sign of worry for the Argentines, as the Serb is running a 57-2 winning record in the current year so far. It will surely require something extraordinary
from the Argentines to take down Djokovic in singles rubbers. Team Serbia runs a perfect record at home and has never been defeated on its soil since becoming an independent nation.
Despite of heavy artillery present in the Team Serbia, the Argentine squad is not to be under estimated and with the lights of Del Potro, Chela, Monaco and Nalbandian, anything can be expected from it. It is noticeable that if
“Mister Invincible”, Djokovic, wins two of the single rubbers in the tie, the Argentines can target the other Serb contestants to bag victory. It doesn’t matter which of the two top-class teams win the contest, either way it will certainly be a treat for tennis
fans.
