Team Sky disappointed after its performance at the Tour of Flanders 2012
Despite some tremendous performances by Edvald Boasson Hagen and Juan Antonio Flecha, Team Sky failed to make an impression at the Tour of Flanders 2012.
Hagen had a blistering start to the race but could not match the likes of Tom Boonen, Filippo Pozzato and Alessandro Ballan.
Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step finished the race in a fastest time of 6 hours, 4 minutes and 33 seconds to fill his bag with yet another victory at the race.
Filippo Pozzato finished almost at the same time to grab the second position while Alessandro Ballan finished one second behind at the third position.
Greg Van Avermaet of Team BMC and Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale claimed the fourth and the fifth positions after the race.
Team Sky had to face the disappointment as it failed to finish amongst the top ten during the 256 kilometre chase to Oudenaarde.
Edvald Boasson Hagen was the team’s top performer after his 19 place finish at the event with Juan Antonio Flecha finishing at the 20th position.
Servais Knaven told Cyclingnews, "We're happy with Flecha. He didn't ride for four weeks and when you come back to this level again, with the best riders”.
He further added that, “I think then you can be happy with his ride. Edvald did a good ride as well and he showed what he is capable of and he's looking good for next weekend at Paris-Roubaix".
"I think we did a good race. We were always at the front and had good team work. In my eyes it was just a shame that Edvald was left standing still on the Paterberg with the crash", he concluded.
Team Sky is currently holding the second overall spot after the UCI World Tour team’s rankings as of April 1st, 2012.
The team has filled its bag with a total number of 356 UCI points and is 20 points behind Team Liquigas-Cannondale.
Wiggins, Hagen, Uran, Rogers and Eisel have contributed 112, 70, 63, 61 and 50 points in the respective order to help the team with its current second overall position.
The team is now targeting the Tour of Basque Country and Paris-Roubaix to make up for the lost points at the Tour of Flanders.
