Team Sky dominates as Simon Gerrans wins Tour of Denmark – Cycling Update
Despite finishing 24th in the 162.4 kilometre stage 6 from Hillerod to Frederiksberg in the Tour of Denmark, 2011 cyclist Simon Gerrans managed to have enough points to win the Tour. Theo Bos of team Rabobank finished first with Sacha Modolo and
Manuel Belletti of team Colnago finishing second and third respectively in the stage 6th of Tour of Denmark.
It goes back five years when in 2006 Gerrans won the Herald Sun Tour and this win at Tour of Denmark, 2011 is the first Tour win for the cyclist since then.
“Leopard [Team Leopard Trek] controlled the peloton for the first sprint with the goal to reduce back my advantage so I think it was a huge blow to their confidence when I outsprinted Bennati and extended my lead,” said Gerrans after the race.
Daniele Bennati of Leopard Trek was seen exhausted towards the end as he finished second with 9 seconds behind the race winner at the final general classifications. Gerrans briefed that it was totally a team effort as team Sky was controlling the stage right
from the start. His team-mates guarded him throughout the race to ensure that he is protected as he managed to occupy the top step of podium.
It was a dual celebration for team Sky as they topped the team classifications with a total time of 57:37:43 with Saxo Bank Sungard ten seconds behind at second spot and Leopard Trek at third position with 38 seconds behind Team Sky.
Marcus Ljungqvist, Sports Director for Sky was pleased with Gerrans victory as he said, “It’s a really good result, a very nice win for Simon and for the team. Like always without the help of the team it is difficult to pull something off so it was great
to see.”
Simon Gerrans finished the race first with a total time of 19:12:01, Italian cyclist Daniele Bennati finished seconds as he was 9 seconds behind with Michael Morkov at third slot with 29 seconds behind after the final general classifications.
