Team USA firmly holds the top position in Pool B of the Olympic Tournament – Volleyball News
US women’s volleyball team completed its winning streak of four matches by defeating Serbia at the Earls Court, London on Friday.
The American women dominated the Serbs and edged them out in straight sets of 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-16). Around 9,000 spectators came to watch the thrilling encounter between USA and Serbia. Victory enabled USA to keep the top slot in hand with a total of
12 points after four matches.
Destinee Hooker of USA was named the top-scorer of the match as she registered match-high 19 points. She added 12 spikes, 6 blocks and one service ace in the match. Her teammate Logan Tom also played well and finished with 12 points, while Foluke Akinradewo
contributed 11 points.
Brankica Mihajlovic fought for Sebria and claimed team-high 13 points, in the match. Moreover, Jovana Brankocevic and Milena Rasic contributed 8 points apiece.
Serbs started out well and came strong on the rival side. They added quick points and promptly went up on the scoreboard. American players took some time to settle down in their positions and then started the counter attack. With the help of nice combinations
of attack and defence, US team managed to shorten the gap of points. They continued putting more and more effort, and managed to overcome the rivals. Serbs fell down and failed to return in the game. They dropped opening set at 25-17, which was followed by
two more set defeats. Serbia lost the match, while USA marched away with victory.
Winning captain of US team Lindsey Berg seemed totally delighted about victory. She expressed her emotions in the following manner: “It's amazing that we're through and have won the group but we have another chance on Sunday to get better as a team. As long
as we continue to play our game, we will be unstoppable.”
Meanwhile, Jovana Brakocevic stated: “We were just playing for ourselves today and we will do the same for the final match. The USA team are very good and potential gold medalists. We put up the fight, less in the first set where we were tired. We don't
think like that. We were missing more than half of the team. Half is injured and we didn't practice enough.
USA is scheduled to take on Turkey in the final match of the Olympic Prelims on Sunday. Turkey is far behind USA in the tournament, but still the Americans are determined to give their 100% in the match. Serb ladies, on the other hand, will meet Brazil.
