Team USA routs Germany in 8-0 Shutout in opening World Junior Championship Game -NHL Update
Following a grueling defeat from Team Canada, Germany’s National Junior Team faced another major loss, this time during the opening game for the United States National Team as they completely shutout their European counterparts, 8-0, on Thursday, December
27, 2012.
Montreal Canadiens 18-year-old forward, Alex Galchenyuk had a cominated performance in what was his first game at such an international level and that too, representing the United States. The native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States, put up a goal along
with two assists to put down the German team for the second straight time.
"Alex is coming into his own," U.S. coach Phil Housley told NHL.com. "I thought tonight was good to see him score. He was very composed. We're going to need more production form his line. It was good for him and Kuraly and Barber to contribute."
"I'm happy how I played today, and I thought our team played good," Galchenyuk told NHL.com. "[Our line] did the small things and we contributed offensively and defensively. We have to do the same thing [Friday]."
Galchenyuk was picked up by the Montreal Canadiens as the third overall back in round-one of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft and is yet to play in the North American major league due to a lockout which killed those chances off. He has played
in the past two seasons with Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and was one of the leading forwards for the minor league club.
Sean Kuraly of the San Jose Sharks and Riley Barber, a top prospect of the Washington Capitals, were another pair of leading contributors, who both, combined for three goals and five assists, having a breakthrough performance and looking forward to their
next matchups in the series.
The next matchup is between the United States and Russia on Friday, December 28, at 9 AM ET. It will definitely be interesting to see whether the United States team will be able to play the same way against a much higher ranked club, Team Russia, when the
time comes.
Fans should look forward to another great performance by Alex Galchenyuk.
