Team UnitedHealthcare signs Danny Summerhill for 2013 season
After spending two seasons with the Team Garmin Sharp development side, Continental Chipotle Development Team, Danny Summerhill will now be seen with the Professional Continental squad, Team UnitedHealthcare for 2013 season.
The cyclist was delighted after making it through to his first Professional Continental team and is optimistic to find the right form early on the season.
His new contract begins on January 1st, 2013 as revealed during a recent announcement by Summerhill himself.
"My contract says as of January 1st that I'll be a UnitedHealthcare racer and athlete, but in all this winter downtime, the team didn't have any races so I'm just doing my part to try to get them some extra publicity," he confirmed.
"It was official awhile ago, but they've done so much for me, picking me up and taking me to my first Pro Continental team, that I want to do all I can to help the sponsor and help the team".
The American pictures himself as a professional road cyclist however; he is not ready to completely end his affiliations with the cyclo-cross discipline.
The most prominent performance of his cycling career came during the UCI Cyclo-Cross World Championships 2007, where he managed to claim the silver medal.
Danny already claimed solid results at the recent UCI C1-ranked event scheduled at the Eva Bandman Park, the site for the UCI Cyclo-cross 2013 World Championships in February.
The 23-year-old’s commendable performances in the 2012 season include fourth place finishes at the Colorado Cross Classic and Fort Collins and managed to occupy his first podium position at the Boulder Cup.
He rode brilliantly throughout the race but falls short of Ryan Trebon in a two-man sprint and had to settle for the second spot.
"Getting out-sprinted at the Boulder Cup by Ryan by a couple of inches really hurt," he noted.
He said that a podium finish was the only thing missing in his season and it is definitely a big boost in his confidence for the new season.
It will be interesting to see if Summerhill manages to find the right form with his new Professional-Continental outfit in the season ahead.
