Team Vacansoleil-DCM announced its final squad for the Giro d’ Italia 2012
Team Vacansoleil-DCM is setting its eyes for the Giro d’ Italia 2012 as the biggest goal of its 2012 season.
The team is sending a total number of nine cyclists chosen from different parts of the world and is aiming to secure stages at the event.
The Dutch team was founded in 2008, and has secured numerous victories in the earlier years of its establishment.
Sports Director Jean-Paul van Poppel is determined that the team will take its performance to the next level at the coming race.
He stated, “Early in the year we spoke with riders about aiming on the Giro. This means that those riders had a long time to prepare”.
“The current selection seems well balanced and ready for the adventure. We have got a sprinter, time trial specialists, climbers and possible general classification riders”.
“A real team to go for a stage win which is hopefully able to continue the growth the team showed in 2012 stage races”.
The Dutch side has already filled its bag with as many as five victories in the 2012 season, including one stage at the Etoile de Besseges and three stages at the Paris-Nice.
Bert-Jan Lindeman helped the team with a first place finish during the Ronde van Drenthe.
A total number of nine cyclists to ride the Giro d’ Italia include Martijn Keizer, Thomas De Gendt, Mirko Selvaggi, Matteo Carrara, Stefan Denifl, Tomasz Marczynski, Sergey Lagutin, Gustav-Erik Larsson  and Romain Feillu.
Martin Mortensen is the only Danish rider in the team and he is looking forward at the race that is starting in his homeland.
“The decision for the last spot was very hard and it is a pity for Martin that he is not there. He knows our reasons and took the loss like a sportsman,” Poppel explained.
The 2012 version of the Giro d’ Italia is scheduled from May 5-27 and a total number of 18 World Tour and 4 Professional Continental teams will participate at the event.
Winner of the race will earn 170 UCI points while the second and the third position holders will be awarded with 130 and 100 points respectively.
