Teams to rely on FIA and Bernie Ecclestone regarding decision about Bahrain Grand Prix – Formula 1
According to some recent developments in Bahrain and the political unrest, it seems that the season opening race might have to be moved to another venue and the Formula 1 teams have vowed that they will abide the decision of Bernie Ecclestone and the FIA
regarding this matter.
Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner recent stated on behalf of the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) that the teams held a meeting after the first day of the 3rd pre-season test session that took place in Barcelona and
they are aware of the problems the FIA is currently facing regarding this matter.
“It's obviously a really difficult situation in Bahrain, but we have complete trust in Bernie, FOM and the FIA to make the right decision. They will only send us there if it is safe,” Horner said.
Other than that, he also stated that obviously it would affect the 2011 Formula 1 season and that it would be a shame if the Bahrain Grand Prix does not take place this year.
“It would be a great shame to lose the race, but it's not the teams' decision. It's down to the promoter. Bernie and the FIA will have much more information than us and we will trust their decisions,” Christian added.
It is expected that Bernie Ecclestone would announce the FIA decision regarding this matter on the 3rd of March and according to Bernie’s recent statement, it seems that he wants the race to happen and he is willing to take some
chances as well.
He stated that since the situation in Bahrain is changing as each hour passes by, the FIA will wait and not make a decision very hastily.
However, Horner is confident that the decision the FIA and Bernie would make would be satisfactory for the teams and they are also trying their best to help them in anyway if they can as well.
“We will wait for feedback from FOM and the FIA and make a decision accordingly. We're looking at some alternatives because we don't know whether we can go to Bahrain,” said Christian.
Nevertheless, the 2011 Formula 1 season is definitely going to be interesting for the fans and it is expected that the upcoming season would be dramatic. It seems that the drama has already started beforehand. One has to admit though, if the first race takes
place at a different venue, the teams’ strategies would be affected immensely and that would make the 2011 Formula 1 season even more unpredictable.
Other than that, the season opening race is very important for each team so the teams will be hoping that things cool down as soon as possible and the season begins as planned by the FIA.
