Tearful Petra Kvitova couldn’t handle the big match-day pressure at Istanbul – Tennis News
Defending Champion from Czech Republic, Petra Kvitova, was reduced to tears at the indoor hard courts of Istanbul when she failed to make an impact against the fourth ranked Pole star, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the curtain raiser
for the WTA (Women Tennis Association) year-end finale Championships. She committed an uncharacteristic 41 unforced errors that was definitely not on the cards before the start of the contest. She lost the match in straight sets 3-6, 2-6 lasting almost an
hour and 23 minutes in the contest.
In a post-match press conference, the 22-year-old Czech said, “It was a little bit different, but the nerves were there for sure. I was nervous all the match. I felt my fingers weren't still moving and I didn't move on my legs.
I'm disappointed in myself.”
She further added, “I had a lot of errors and it wasn't good tennis from my side. If you are not playing like some matches before and now you have a player who's number four in the world, it's not easy to be relaxed.”
Kvitova pictured the feeling of entering into the same arena where she left as a champion in the previous edition by stating, “I love playing here. When I was coming on the court, the crowd was unbelievable - when I heard the people,
it was so nice to have those memories back.”
It must be difficult for the sixth ranked Czech to repeat such a heroic performance just like the last year because she is not enjoying the same exclusive run of form at the moment. She might have captured two titles just two months
ago but her form throughout the season was substandard; especially when compared to the previous season where she had a major breakthrough winning the Wimbledon title in New York.
Kvitova is not in action on Day 2 of the contest. She will have ample time to regroup and devise a new strategy to overpower two remaining competitors named Sara Errani and Maria Sharapova. She is expected to go through the Italian
star easily but her battle with the Russian will be the decider.
