Tebowing and more on show as Los Angeles Kings crush Washington Capitals 5-2 - NHL Update
Another game, another loss for the Washington Capitals. This time losing to the Los Angeles Kings by 5-2, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, United States, on Monday, January 9, 2012.
It was an easy victory for the Kings when they started going and did not look back even once, punishing the Capitals mercilessly with defenseman, Jack Johnson, ending his 17-game goal drought.
It was just one of those nights for the hapless Capitals' goalie, Tomas Vokoun, who even after making 23 saves, let in four before being pulled by Capitals' coach, Dale Hunter.
Washington's captain, Alexander Ovechkin, had another scoreless game and the Capitals struggled as they again failed to find someone else to take on the goal-scoring burden since Ovechkin dismissed all such suggestions at his post game chat with the press,
saying that his team made costly errors.
"I don't think it's all about me. It's all about us," Ovechkin said.
"We had a good start. We had emotion and we scored the first goal, but after that, we stopped playing and we made too many mistakes that cost us the game.
Kings had one of their best nights in offense, finally scoring more than a single goal and showcasing their expensively arrayed attacking trio.
"It's not like they're not capable," LA Kings coach, Darryl Sutter, said.
"All of them ... should be in their best years. We're just working on confidence and scoring. If I didn't believe they were capable, I wouldn't emphasize it so much."
Kings continue their push to the playoffs with the win, now moving up to second in the Pacific Division with a 21-15-7 record, while Capitals slump to third in the Southeast Division with a poor 21-17-2 record.
Washington Capitals took the lead in the first period at 1:34 through Marcus Johansson, who scored his eighth goal of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season.
However, it looked like something clicked for Los Angeles Kings as Kyle Clifford equalised the score at, 1-1, beating Vokoun, and then eight minutes later, Capitals' goaltender had to take the puck out of his net once more when Anze Kopitar got his name
up on the scoreboard as well.
The second period was dominated by the Kings, who scored two more goals to put the game to bed.
Jack Johnson ended his goal drought with a well taken third goal for the Kings and celebrated by imitating the National Football League’s (NFL) Denver Broncos' quarterback, Tim Tebow’s signature praying position, while Jarret Stoll made it 4-1, with just
four minutes left in the second period.
Washington’s Marcus Johansson scored his second goal of the night as consolidation to end the game at 5-2.
The Capitals will look to dodge a third straight defeat on Wednesday when they go against the Pittsburgh Penguins, while the Kings will face Dallas Stars on Thursday.
