I have a Ducane 3 ton heat pump(1300 sqft). Came home and indoor temp was 82 (therm set for 78) on a 102 degree day. Called tech and he came to check the unit. I am not very AC savy, so I watched and tried to grasp what was happening. He said the freon in the unit was alright. He checked the outside board it tested okay. He then tried to cause the unit to "pump down" and it would only drop on the meters about 20. I think the readings were at about 110 and 80. Not sure about those numbers. He could not get the compressor to do the "pump down". It eventually did an internal dump and he stopped trying to get it to pump down. He then tested the reversing valve and it was working correctly. He stated that the compressor was going out and would need to be replaced. He said the compressor was under warranty and that he would order a new compressor and install it for $ 425.00. Does this sound correct and is the labor/swap quote seem reasonable. Thanks for any help or suggestions.
