  1. Automotive engineers finally accepted the idea that many people knew for a long time: a tachometer is more accurate than a speedometer.  That is why racing cars have have had them for decades. Speedometer gears are made of plastic and will wear, causing an incorrect reading.  Also, a tachometer will tell you when you are pushing an engine to its limits; a speedometer won't.

  2. Just to let u know how much u are accelerating and wether your acceleration is properly synronised with your gear level / speed or not. For this u need to know the throttle vs speed ratio given in your vehicle mannual. If you follow that ratio it will optimise the mileage of your vehicle.

Tachometer was already there, intitially in some high end 4 wheelers, now a days it is very much common in all 4 wheelers and premium/executive segment bikes in India.

  3. cars have had tachs for a very long time.

to montior performance and identify any potential problems-the same reason the other gauges exist.

  4. for manual transmissions so you know when to shift but they put them in everything now if you have a automatic transmission you don't need to pay attention to it
