Techniques for improved passing in volleyball
Volleyball is a team sport that involves the use of various specialized skills and techniques by its players.  For any team to be successful in the sport of volleyball, its players must have good grasp over the basic as well as the specialized skills. However,
it is not necessary for all the players to have the specialized skills such as spiking or setting because a team can function well with some specialized players. On the other hand, there are some skills that all the players should master as these skills and
techniques lay the foundation of a good volleyball team.
The basic skill set that every volleyball player should be good at include skills such as passing, hitting and blocking etcetera. If a volleyball player wants to improve a certain skill set, there are various techniques that can be adopted for the purpose
of being more effective during training as well as practice.
Misty May expresses the importance of having the skills and techniques in order to be successful in volleyball in the following words, “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication just like any pro sport. Especially for beach volleyball you don’t have to
be tall or as fast as other sports. You just have to have the skills.”
The fundamental of a good game of volleyball is the ability of the players to pass the ball to each other effectively. However, in order to pass the ball well volleyball players should practice the following techniques and include them in their regular matches.
The essence of a good pass is the starting posture of the player. Before receiving the pass, the player should be on the alert and adopt an athletic position. In this position, the knees of the player should be bent at a comfortable level. When the ball
is in motion, the player should practice fast footwork in order to head towards the ball. A player should be in constant motion as soon as the ball leaves the server on the other side of the court and he or she should always focus on the incoming ball while
at the same time moving along with it. If a player detects that the ball is aimed at him or her, the speed and type of the ball should be ascertained before making the pass. For instance the ball could be floating or spinning.
Once a player decides to make the pass, there are different types of passes that he or she can perform. If the player is making a pass using the forearms, than one of the ways to deliver a good one is to get directly behind the ball and make the hit from
the midline of the body. If the player wants to pass the ball to the right, the player must stand slightly to the left of the ball and hit the ball with the right shoulder dropped. The same is the case if the ball needs to be passed to the left, only the left
shoulder should be dropped this time.
These are some of the ways in which the passing ability of a player can be improved. Several variations of the above mentioned techniques can be tired to match one’s style of passing in volleyball. If these techniques are practised in the training sessions,
the individual performance of a player as well as the team will improve significantly.
