  1. Tennis comes readily to mind.  Racket design, materials, and features have become so advanced and such a competitive field, I remember Head rackets were once banned from competition for providing too much of an advantage.  Today, tennis has evolved from a soft and slow paced sport into a mean monster rally.  Andy Roddick holds the record for the fastest serve to date, a whopping 155 mph (249.4 km/h)!  Even with better rackets, that wouldn't have been possible if we didn't have better strings as well.  Today, we have half-kevlar strings (kevlar is one of the materials you make bullet-proof vests out of, by the way) and many different materials.  The amazing about it is the pace of the evolution in this sport; a short 20 years ago, we were still using long, wooden rackets and long, lobbing strokes.  Today, if you flip the channel to Wimbledon or the US Opens, you'll see serves, smashes, and forehands that are so fast and so hard, they could cause some damage in an accident.

Yes, the players have become better, faster, stronger, but I think we owe a lot to technological advancements as well.

Of course, tennis is only one in MANY such cases; golf, with people hitting past the 300 or 400 yard barriers, are a good example as well.  Better clubs and better balls are helping along, as well as the new "hybrids", an iron AND a wood, ever heard of that?  I've also seen golf balls that contain LEDs inside, and flash so you can find your ball more easily.  Gloves, something that used to have to be replaced every few weeks, are now being made with better, softer, and stronger materials.

I'm very athletic, but I haven't had an opportunity to pick up many sports, though it's a personal goal of mine to do so.  Hopefully, I'll be able to discover more interesting facets to each and every competitive sport.  I hope I helped with the question!

  2. The bikes used in the Tour De France are over the top with technology.  They use titanium frames, and all the lightest/strongest materials to make the bike as light, yet as strong as possible.  One of those bikes costs in the vicinity of $20 or $30,000.  A past technological advancement in sport was in pole vaulting.  Years past, the pole vaulting pole was made of bamboo, then aluminum.  The pole was thick, and very stiff and didn't bend.  Sometime in the 60s or 70s, along came the fiberglass pole that bent almost in half and "shot" the vaulter over the pole.  There was a lot of debate then, whether the fiberglass pole should be made legal in the sport.  But eventually, it was okayed and it has been used ever since, making bamboo and aluminum poles obsolete.  So the new swimsuits are just another item in the technology of sport.
