Ted Lindsay Award: New York Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist among finalists-NHL News
The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced three finalists for this year’s Ted Lindsay Award, formerly the Lester B. Person Award.
According to an NHL release, the shortlisted players are two centres and one goaltender.
One of them will be given the award at a ceremony, scheduled to be held on June 15, 2012, at the Encore Theatre of Wynn in Las Vegas.
Tampa Bay Lightning’s centre, Steven Stamkos, Pittsburgh Penguins’ centre, Evgeni Malkin and New York Rangers’ goaltender, Henrik Lundqvist, are the selected players.
The winner will be selected by the NHL Players Association (NHLPA).
The league awards its best players and officials with trophies and other awards each year, based on their performance and contribution towards the development of their respective teams and ice hockey in USA and Canada, overall.
Former and present stars from various walks of life, particularly from the sports and entertainment industries, will attend the ceremony and performances from singers and actors are also part of the event.
All the three players are also nominated for this year’s Hart Trophy, which is bestowed "to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team."
It is third selection for Lundqvist this year as he has also been shortlisted for the Vezina Trophy.
If he wins in all three categories, it will be a rare occurence in the league’s history, and a hallmark achievement for the player.
Even with two wins he will join the list of 13 players who have won the awards in Hart and Lindsay categories, respectively, in the same season.
Almost all members of the NHL community, and particularly Lundqvist’s teammates, welcomed the nomination of the netminder for these awards.
They said the player, who stands out due to his form and has helped his side in a majority of wins, is well deserving of this honour.
They hope he wins the award in all nominated categories.
