Ted Potter Jr. breaks tournament record to clinch his maiden victory on Nationwide Tour in South Georgia Classic
Ted potter Jr., one of the Monday qualifiers who were participating in the South Georgia Classic, shattered the previous tournament record to clinch the title with a whopping 16-under, 272. Potter, who is the two-time Hooters Tour Player of the year in 2006
and 2009, finished three strokes ahead of the seasoned Nationwide player, Mathew Goggin, to claim the winner’s prize share of $112,500 and also his first win on the Tour.
"I was more nervous after I finished the round," said Potter. "I was fine most of the day. I was just trying to draw back on my past experiences and focus on every shot. I don't know how to describe it. I was nervous and happy."
Potter entered the final round of the tournament, tied in the lead with the Canadian, Jon Mills. He carded three birdies on the front nine and went ahead to grab two more on the back nine and stumbled with just one bogey to finish three-under, 69.
The 27-year-old Potter is the fifth left-handed player to win on the tour. He is also the only Monday qualifier who has won on the tour after Kyle Reifers won the Chattanooga Classic in 2006. The American golfer has been a part of the field in the 2004,
2007 and 2010 in Nationwide Tour and has played 56 times on the tour. His best finish before this title was the 2010 Chattanooga Classic where he finished tied for 11th.
"This win ranks as my highest ever," said Potter, "I've won on other Tours and they were really nice but this one means a lot more right now."
Potter had qualified to participate in the tour after his blistering 66 on Monday at the Glen Arven Country Club in Thomasville, Ga.
"Going forward hopefully I can play more consistently than I have in the past," he added.
All four past winners of the tournament were part of the field at this year’s South Georgia Classic presented by First State Bank and Trust & Co. John Kimbell, winner of the 2007 event, finished tied for 18th. Bryan Decorso, winner of the 2008
event, finished 12-over for 71st. Garth Mulroy, winner of the 2009 event finished tied for 18th and last year’s winner Ewan Porter finished tied for 38th. Potter was among the seven Monday qualifiers who were participating
in the event.
