Ted Potter Jr. finally finds the winning touch, takes Greenbrier Classic trophy home
After missing five straight cuts, the PGA Tour rookie, Ted Potter Jr., finally won the Greenbrier Classic, with a birdie on the third extra hole in the playoffs, on Sunday, July 8, 2012.
Potter tied for the 13th position in the Sony Open, in Hawaii, early in the season, which was his best finish over the past 15 tournaments that he played.
He finally found the winning touch at The Old White TPC, in White Sulphur Springs, when he succeeded in overcoming a four-stroke deficit with four holes to play in the final round, to match Troy Kelly at 16-under par tournament score.
He recorded birdies on the 15th and 18th hole, along with an amazing eagle on the 17th to enter the playoffs for the first time in his career.
Both the players parred the first two holes in the playoff, prior to Potter’s four-foot putt for a birdie to claim the $1,098,000 prize money. Moreover, he also became the sixth first-time winner on the tour this year.
“Just amazing feeling right now,” he said. “Just knowing I've got a couple more years out here to have full exemption, to be able to play what I want to play in and be able to schedule my own tournaments and where I want to play and stuff like that's going
to be nice, so looking forward to that”.
With this win, he now has the status of playing the PGA Tour for the next two years. Moreover, he will also be a part of this month’s British Open Championship and next year’s Masters Tournament.
"Just winning," Potter said. "I just like to win. It was just a big relief. All the struggles the last few weeks, knowing that now I've got a couple years to try to improve on my game and win some more tournaments".
Potter joined the Web.com Tour, formerly known as Nationwide Tour, in 2004, and did not find much success until he secured the second spot on the money list last year. As a result, he received a chance to play on the PGA Tour in 2012.
He, along with Kelly and Marc Leishman, the winner of Travelers Championship this year, will pack his bags for the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club to participate in the British Open, scheduled to start from July 19, 2012.
