Ted Potter Jr. posts a thrilling victory at Soboba Golf Classic on Nationwide Tour
Ted Potter Jr., one of the rising stars of the Nationwide Tour, posted his second tour victory on Sunday, September 25, when he took the better off the field at the Soboba Golf Classic. The event was held at Country Club Soboba Springs, San Jacinto, California.
The current season has churned out amazing results for the 27-year-old, who also won the South Georgia Classic in May. With the winner’s prize share of $135,000, Potter has now soared to number three on the money list making sure that he will be playing
on the PGA Tour, next year.
Potter won the title on the Playoffs where he forged his way up the leaderboard after taking over Andres Gonzales and Argentinean, Miguel Angel Carballo. This was also the first playoff in the last three years on Nationwide Tour which also demonstrates the
parity which has evolved in recent times.
Potter and Gonzales birdied the first playoff hole to proceed to take it to the next one, while Carballo failed to do so after his shot went 100-feet over the green.
Carballo, who decided to use an eight-iron instead of a six he used earlier said, “The wind changed a little bit. I just didn't want to leave it short.”
While Potter pulled in a stunning eagle on the second playoff hole, Gonzales found a dreadful bunker, 60-feet from the pin, thus losing a chance to stage a historic win in his career. Gonzales said, “I hit a decent bunker shot and the green was running away.
I didn't want to leave it on top of the ridge. Once it got going down the ridge I knew it wasn't going to stop. I needed to give it a chance.”
Australian Jarrod Lyle and Swede Jonas Blixt finished for a joint fourth, trailing the leaders by two shots. Four players were tied for the joint sixth including John Mallinger, Luke List, Tim Wilkinson and Matt Every.
Potter is the third two-time winner on the tour this year, after J.J. Killeen and Mathew Goggin. The top-25 players on the money list will proceed to play on the PGA Tour in the next year, and a strong performance there can ensure a playing status for a
longer period of time.
