Teddy Tamgho among favourites at the European Athletics Under-23 Championships – Athletics news
As the Biannual athletics event of the European Athletics Under-23 Championships kicks-off today at Ostrava, a city of the Czech Republic, it is Teddy Tamgho, the triple jumper from France, who will enter the field as a pre-favourite.
The European Athletics Under-23 Championships is an athletics tournament which is primarily organised for European athletes. As the name suggests, all participants of the event are of 23 years of age or below. The prestigious sporting event is organised
by the European Athletics Association. First held in 1997, the primary reason of having this event was to finding out a substitute for the much celebrated European Athletics Under-23 Cup.
Tamgho, who is regarded as the third best triple jumper ever, boasts of a personal best of 17.98m which he marked in last year’s Adidas Grand Prix. In the same year, the 22-year-old athlete dominated the IAAF Diamond League, along with an impressive success
at the European Athletics Championships, where he ended third on the podium.
While taking part in this season’s European Athletics U-23 Championships, Tamgho got his name registered in the Long Jump and Triple Jump competitions. It has not been confirmed yet as to whether the formidable athlete will chose to participate in any one
or both of the disciplines. However, if the young athlete opts to play safe and goes for competing at his strength, he will be a definite favourite.
Going for Long Jump event may threaten the athlete to expect some mishaps as well. The primary reason for why the French is not a strong contestant for Long Jump competitions is because he has not appeared on the track for the discipline since March, when
he ended fourth in the European Athletics Indoor Championships.
Besides Tamgho, other prominent athletes which spectators will look forward to see performing on the track are David Storl, the impeccable shot putter from Germany along with Russia’s Darya Klishina. In case of Storl, the venue is rather lucky as this was
the very place where four years ago he had bagged a gold medal at the IAAF World Youth Championships. The young German is among the ten champions who have ensured their participation in the event.
With such strong performers ensuring to appear at the field of the four-day event, the meet is sure to offer an interesting competition before the much awaited IAAF World Athletics Championships, in Daegu.
