Ok I posted a question like 2 days ago, and I need more answers. So she is making a nest in her "hideout", eating alot, and acting strange. Whenever I hold her or put her on my bed it seems like she is trying to run away into her cage. I don't know if she is pregnant, she hasn't been with a male unless i bought her pregnant. There are no nipples, so I'm assuming she's not pregnant. But please help!!!

  1. All hamsters do make nests, whether it's a male or a female.

Hamsters are also afraid of humans, so they do seem the run away and hide.

A gestation period of a hamster is between 16-21 days.

So if you got your hamster a month before, then there is no chance of her pregnancy.

Some hamsters do tend to eat and drink a lot.

But if you notice your hamster is getting fatter and gaining weight frequently, then she might be pregnant...but you should be able to see her nipples (yes, it is difficult to notice them in long haired Syrian hamsters).

If she is pregnant, she would be storing the food in her cheek pouches and then she would store them in her nest, and the nest would also be a lot bigger than her normal nest in order hold the babies and provide enough space.

But if she's drinking frequently, the chances are that she might have diabetes, but I hope it doesn't.

So, your hamster might not be pregnant.

    Hope that helped.

EDIT: If you bought her a week ago, then there might be a chance that she's pregnant.

However, if she is, then you would notice her gaining weight rapidly.

Perhaps, you can take her back to the pet shop and ask them to determine if she is pregnant or not...they are able to tell.

  2. All hamsters make nests, male or female, pregnant or not.

Hamsters SEEM to eat more than they do- they take the food into their cheek pouches and put it in their nest, and only eat a bit of it at a time.

Hamsters are skittish and intitally scared of being handled- that's not odd behaviour to try and get away.

If you can't see nipples, side lumps when you look from behind, increased weight or feel lumps in the stomach, chances are she's not pregnant- hamsters only have a short gestration period of under a month.
