Question:

Teddy guinea pig fur?

I was viewing a rescue site that had a rex for adoption. They said, special grooming instructins for the rex will be provided at time of adoption. I have a teddy and I understand their fur is similar. I was wondering if I should be doing something special to his fur? My texel needs extra grooming but I don't do anything special to my shorthairs besides brushing.

  1. A rex is found mainly in England.  Here in the US, we mostly have teddy piggies.

Two of my boys are teddy & american mixes, so they do have some coarser fur, and both are very fluffy looking.

I still comb their hair every day or other day, or brush it depending on what's closer and who's being squirmier...

The only thing I can think of is that they are more prone to fungal infections on the skin, so that may be the "special" instructions.

  2. I have a teddy bear guinea pig and the fur is really just short and kind of coarse/curly.  It doesn't need brushing or anything to keep it looking good.

Did you get your texel through a rescue?  I've been waiting for one to come through the shelter, but I'll probably be waiting awhile. :P

  3. The only guinea pigs that really need extra grooming are the ones with long hair. Rex/teddy pigs can be treated just like any "plain" short haired pig.

EDIT: Rex and teddy pigs look pretty similar, but they are different genetically - if you breed a rex to a teddy, the offspring will be smooth coated.

Also, the rescue I got my pigs from has had a few texels pass through, so sometimes they do turn up!
