Teemu Hartikainen leads Edmonton Oilers past Anaheim Ducks in final home game 2-1 -NHL Update
It was the last game at home for Anaheim and already having disappointed their fan base with playoff elimination, the Ducks continued to lose and lost a hectic match against Edmonton Oilers, 2-1, Sunday night, April 1, 2012, at the sold-out Honda Center
in Anaheim, California.
Over 17,000 fans showed up in the home season finale but witnessed only a shocking loss to a team that is to be more struggling than they are.
Teemu Hartikainen, another Finnish player on the ice like legendary Anaheim forward, Teemu Selanne, might not be nearly as well known but he certainly put on a show by scoring the two game-winning goals and putting his name up on the boards.
He was playing in his 14th game of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, his second career year in the major league, and very well, it was the biggest game for him as of yet.
Despite the loss, Anaheim was still content with their team, especially the Finnish Flash who still is yet to decide whether he will be playing another season or not.
"It was unbelievable. It's almost funny that they were chanting that for an old guy like me," Selanne said. "But it's was great. Obviously, there's a lot of respect from our fans. I've always had a very special relationship with them, and it's just an honor
to play for them. It's almost like having a seventh player behind you."
Selanne made the only goal of the night for Anaheim and for Edmonton’s young goalie, Devan Dubnyk, it was definitely an honour.
"To give up one, I'm glad it was him (Selanne), at least," Dubnyk said. "I don't think he has any reason to go anywhere unless he wants to. He's certainly one of the most dangerous guys in the league -- that I've seen, anyway."
Edmonton Oilers have the next against Los Angeles Kings on Monday while Anaheim Ducks face Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday.
It will be exciting to see at which level both teams finish the season off as they have already been long eliminated from the playoff race.
