Question:

Teen Piercings & Jobs?

I recently just got my lip pierced, I am 17 years old and my parents think its time for me to get a job again. I've been looking around at jobs that might interest me. I am a very outgoing person and I cannot be shoved in one place for a long period of time. I recently found a job I was interested in at a place called "Minuteman Press." They are hiring for an Office Assistant, this job includes typing, filing and that sort of thing. I wont have to deal with the public unless someone comes in and has a question. But I think people are more likely to call on the phone.

Anyway, I am 17 like I said before, and I was wondering if I could get some guidance on how "elders" look at teens with piercings when they come in to fill out an application. Like, what do you look at?

  1. well it doesn't really matter about what you look like just that you answer the question with interest and  knowing once the people find out that your a hard worker they won't care about your appearance just as long as if fits work guidelines

  2. You should find out what the company's policy is on facial piercings. If the company is okay with it, then it doesn't matter what "elders" think when they come in.

A lot of places require those with piercings to either remove them during work hours, cover them up, or not have them at all, especially when dealing with the public, because some companies have a certain "image" they want to portray.

  3. Appearance is the first thing anyone sees about you.

If they don't like it, tough.

  4. It isn't considered professional.  I wouldn't hire someone who came in with a lip ring unless they went through the trouble of at least putting in a clear one to make it less obvious.

  5. I have a nose ring. It was difficult for me to find a job, even though my GPA was in the top of my class (I just graduated college). It took me eight interviews to be taken seriously, but now that I have a job where they will, I appreciate it all the more.

It can't hurt unless you try. Give it a go! If your personality and ability to work shines though, you should be OK.

A company will never come out and say "we will not hire you b/c of lip ring" but they may not because of it. To not hire because of your lip ring is discrimination, but can only rarely be proved.

  6. I was in the same boat as you. I had my lip pierced and I have tattoos on my wrists. I worked in a gym up at the front desk. I was seeing different people everyday non stop, having to help them take payments, sign them up, check them in. I was face to face with customers all the time.

We weren'tt suppose to have piercings but a lot of people did. Sometimes we either got the clear ring or just take it out when we got to work and then put it back in when you leave. That's the only thing you can really do, or take it out for good but I'm sure you would want to do that!

You can get the clear rings or studs at hot topic, sterling silver or even wal-mart has them

  7. It all depends on the company culture and the person doing the interviewing.  However, I would also say, "better safe than sorry".  Unless you know for a fact that the company culture accepts such piercings, remove it, and cover any tattoos.

If you get the job, talk to your boss and perhaps they will allow you to put it back in.  You might have to gain some 'respect' within the company as a good worker before they tolerate such changes to your appearance.

  8. If I was hiring someone to deal with the public day after day, I

personally wouldn't hire anyone with piercings or tattoos.

If it was someone for office work.....well, maybe.

It's simply not professional. It makes me wonder what

the heck you were thinking when you decided to get

'pierced'. I mean- do you think you actually look better

    with a piercing??!!?? Seriously!

  9. I assume you want honest..... I am somewhat tolerant but look at the realities.

You did say there may be some interaction with the public. There is also interaction with fellow employees. Why is this important? It is important because lip piercings and such other cause people to view and interact with that person in a certain way. Even if it is a subtle thing.

One part is the person is perceived as lacking some sort of inner confidence. Instead of defining themselves to the world by deeds, words and actions they need to adorn themselves to make a statement about who they are.

The other part is that they are not really that smart. They know that people will pass judgments even in this day and age. I ask you how many successful people do you know with piercings? So a person who has them is perceived as having some sort of inner weakness to be unable to recognize that...... or only interested in the now and immediate not the future.

That really all translates to the person probably not being a really good employee pick.

I know a couple of people who used to have lip/eyebrow/piercings and work for major companies. They make decent money and are respected in their jobs. But you can still tell that they had piercings even though they got rid of them long ago. So they are unable to move up the food chain work wise...... successful people over them view them a certain way. It's life.

A teen with peircing? Sorry not getting hired. The assumption is made that the person will be unreliable. Even if it is phone work the assumption is made that the person won't have what it takes to interact properly and put the companies best foot forward.

I pass no judgement myself and I am not really sure if I explained that properly. No offence was intended. But you asked.

Point is you want to not narrow down you job choices, risk not getting paid more and risk not getting promotions. Your choice of course.

You should get rid of the piercing permantly so you can increase your chances in life.

  10. Sometimes to get a job your going to have to sacrifice a few things depending the work environment.  Most places have a dress code where things like piercings should be covered and you can always ask about their dress code policies in an interview but when coming to fill out an application or hand out a resume its best to remove any facial piercings so your not giving anyone any ammo to judge you by.

Interviews are all about judging and someone elses perception of you and while it may stink, its just how the world works.  There are no laws protecting your rights to wear piercings and employers are free to use that as a means of discriminating agasint you when hiring.  If you were disabled though, thats a diffrent story.  Employers can't discriminate on the basis of disability, race, gender, or religion.  Sexuality isn't even protected never mind piercings.

If you want the job, take out the piercings for the interview process and worry about putting them back in when you get the job.

  11. piercings, tattoos and these sort of things are so common now a days but its still highly probable that older people might have trouble getting use to it and will automatiaclly strerotype you and it is plausable that this will affect there willingness to revisit the same place. they dont understand that our generation is coming highly equipped with knowledge, power, reason and that we can accept change and the we are all culturally diverse individuals
