Question:

Teen Vegan- Recipes, good cookbooks, other help?

Hi. I've decided to become a vegan after reading a book on the cruelty and animal abuse in slaughter houses and more. Well, the book gives ideas, but no steps to making the dish. My mom read the book as well and I'm not sure how she is going to change her own diet, but she fully understands my decision. Yesterday we went to the store to pick up a few things and I decided to grab some things I can actually eat and the price was unbelievable. Now, I'm not going to let that stop me, but I was hoping for some money saver ideas and maybe advice about how to keep the bill down. Does it get better as you find the food you like? Any simple recipes or sites with easy recipes for a teen who doesn't usually cook (sometimes)? Whats your favorite Vegan cookbook?

I also have a question about organic fruit. Now, as I said I would like to stay under a certain budget and organic fruit is obviously more expensive. I'm a big fruit eater are the benefits worth the price? I think so.. (cont)

  1. Well, im 13 and vegan and I usually cook my own meals as neither of my parents are vegan. If you go to ethnic markets, they usually have vegan food things that you can get for cheaper than the normal grocery store. If youre living in a smaller town, it will obviously be more expensive..

If I were you, I would start by looking up a few simple recipies on google or something, and maybe buy a vegan cook book. theyre amazing, before I was vegan, I had NO clue on how many dishes there are and how good they are.. You can basically get a subsitute for anything.

And yes, it does get better as you find the foods you like. Vegan food doesnt have to be expensive to be high quality, just ALWAYS read the lables. When buying soy foods, dont buy the ones that have been over prossesed..

Start by doing research. Thats what I did.

Make sure to eat lots of grains and nuts and legumes..

Lentils are great and healthy, almonds are high in calcium..

there are so many things, dont lose hope.

Ohh, Personally, I dont see the difference between organic fruit and non organic fruit for the most part..

Try to buy things that are grown as close to you as you can though, shop at farmers markets and such..

  2. Its awsome that you want to become a vegan but its really hard going from an omnivore to vegan. I went vegetarian to vegan just for a week and it was really hard. Maybe you should become a vegetarian first then progress to vegan.

Type "vegetarian recipes" into any search engine and you will get thousands of recipes.

Organic food is horrifically expensive so try growing some fruit and vegtables in your garden. If you don't have a garden then grow some in a little box on your window sill.
