Actually wearing a life jacket at the lake, beach or a river is always a good idea, even if your a good swimmer. If you fall out of a boat or just get tired it will keep you afloat. Invest the extra money and get a good quality jacket. I use whitewater rafting jackets. They have extra bouyancy and some have a handy collar to keep your head out of the water. The brand I like is MTI. They make a jacket called Canyon - comes in yellow or red. Check www.cascadeoutfitters.com or www.theboatpeople.com. They come in adult small/med or large/x-large sizes.
