Teens tee off AT&T National
There were some unfamiliar faces at the Congressional Golf and Country Club, two teenagers were asked to tee off the AT&T National, along with Tiger Woods.
AT&T National is a tournament that Tiger Woods hosts himself and it benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation. The Tiger Woods Foundation is dedicated to work for the betterment of the poor children of America.
The focus of the Foundation is mainly on the health and education of those children.
The local teenagers hit the shots along with Tiger Woods, who won here in 2009.
Sarah Hesterman, a local, aged 13, is currently studying at The Academy of the Holy Cross in Kensington. Whereas Nicholas Joy, aged 15, comes from Upper Marlboro.
Both of them teed off along with Tiger Woods to officially kick start the tournament.
AT&T National is one of the five tournaments that have been given the invitational status by the PGA Tour.
Hesterman has been practicing golf since she was 6 years old. She hit the ball just short of fairways and was excited to see all the stars playing at the AT&T National.
“It was really cool to meet him, she said when asked about meeting Tiger Woods. “I was nervous, but he is really nice”.
As this tournament honors the military personnel, the two young kids were chosen because, apart for them being rising young golfers, they are also children belonging to the families of military personnel.
Hesterman’s parents are from the US Air Force, where as Joy’s father is from Army National Guard’s.
Joy’s father is also his coach for last two years or so. Tiger Woods praised the tee shot that Nicholas hit, he was very impressed. “That was pretty cool,” Tiger said to Joy.
Hesterman, too, works with her father but, unlike Joy, she also has a professional coach with whom she works on her golf swing.
Andy Viglucci is Hesterman’s coach and he is really impressed by the talent that she posses.
“She works hard and she can hit the ball,” he said. “If she wants, this could take her college or the pros”.
It was interesting to watch the teenagers play alongside golf stars. They added appeal to the tournament that is already boasting about four days of heightened entertainment.
