Teeth extraction: please help!

Question

Hi, I got two premolars extracted today, for braces purposes. I just checked the gauze pads and they're still bleeding: is it normal? it's been 2 and 1/2 hours. It's not a very bad bleeding, meaning that the pads haven't become completely red and I can leave them on for an hour without changing them. I just would like to know when I should expect for it to stop! If anyone wants to share their experience, I'm all ears! :-)

I really don't know about that other answerer's suggestion to use straws. I know that with wisdom teeth you're NOT supposed to use straws, because they can do serious damage. I realize yours weren't wisdom teeth, but they were still teeth that were extracted. I'd call and check about both the bleeding and the straw issues. The bleeding is probably normal if it's not too much (that's why you're wearing the gauze). If it gets worse or doesn't let up by tomorrow, I'd call and check in.

i had 2 teeth removed(braces too). . . dont worry by tommorow your teeth will stop bleeding it will be a little sore so try to have soup or eat with front teeth . . .extraction point may be sensative to heat or cold!

I had 4 taken out last year for orthodontic reasons too. The bleeding is normal, I remember my face been completely numb and not able to spit and the blood was going through the gauze too quickly. It was really miserable for a day, but I'm sure by tomorrow you'll find that it's ok. If bleeding continues I would call your dentist, but for now you should be fine.

Mine did the same thing.  I had mine removed in the morning time and the bleeding stopped completely by that night and i kept ice packs on my face the whole first day after the surgery.

It's more difficult for blood to clot properly (and therefore stop bleeding) if the wound is in a moist environment without steady pressure.  Unfortunately by taking the gauze out to check it, you're likely disturbing the clot that is starting to form, reopening it again.  Slight bleeding is normal, I bled for 4 hours after I had my wisdom teeth removed, but it was a very small amount.  Stay away from aspirin and you should be okay in a little while.  Good luck!

They'll bleed for days, that's why you are supposed to use straws lest you suck the scabs out.

DON'T use a straw. Don't suck, smoke, spit, or use a straw. Take the gauze out. If it's not constantly bleeding it is fine. It's normal to have bleeding. If it's not excessive take the gauze out and have something cold like a popsicle. Use a cold pack to reduce any pain or swelling within the first 24 hours. That will also help with bleeding. After the first 24 hours apply warm face cloths or warm packs to your face.
