Question:

Teething Puppy not eating all 4 meals???

We have a 4month old puppy who has been through so much within the last month. 3 weeks ago his kidney enzymes were still elevated and we get that checked in 2 weeks. 2 days ago we noticed his big boy teeth were coming in, and then yesterday, we noticed that our eager eating pup was not eating his dinner meal (medi-cal gastro food..that he normally loves). This morning I had to finger feed him...

Is this normal for teething puppies to go through, or are we facing something else? He's drinking water normally, a little tired but energetic outside...

  1. No this doesn't sound normal, I would bring him back to the vet and have them run some blood tests, see if anything is wrong. It could be nothing but better safe than sorry, especially if he's already had some health issues recently.

  2. If your giving him hard food then try soft puppy food.

  3. Its asposed to be three meals a day.

  4. At 4 months, he's only beginning teething with losing his incisors and those aren't a big deal to puppies.  If he's not eating, he's just letting you know that he doesn't need or want 4 meals a day.  By this age, most puppies have been cut down to 3 meals, or even 2 meals a day.  My puppy, who isn't yet 4 months old, has been on 2 meals a day for a while now - and doesn't want a third.

  5. No, that's NOT normal for teething puppies to not eat.  Puppies at that age are usually eating -- and chewing -- everything.

  6. It's not normal for them to stop eating while teething, they tend to want to bite on everything, so it sounds like you need to see the vet again and find out what the problem is.

  7. If he is behaving normally in every other way (lots of play, etc.) and not losing weight then its probably normal. The last thing you want to do is overfeed pups. Keep an eye on it and if it continues, bring him to the vet.

He really only needs 3 meals at this age.

Its good to keep them on meals little and often when they are young though, up to about 6 months, then start reducing them, eventually to 2 at about a year or younger.

Try him on a bit of raw meat for a meal, if he's healthy he'll eat.

In fact, try to raise your pups on an all-raw diet, at least until they're a year old.

    Good luck!
