Question:

Teflon coating on Propellers?

by  |  earlier

I was wondering if anybody has coated aluminum propellers with Teflon instead of anti fouling with traditional products. And if so how durable was the coating and did it help repel barnacles.

The other question is cost and what was the application process.

The other product I'm considering is PropSpeed which I believe is a silicone based product.

All answers welcome.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Steve, back in the 1960's you could a SST prop that would fit Merc, and OMC i/o rigs. It was a Stainless Steel Teflon prop. I never owned one, but they were available. Have not seen one for a long, long time, so I guess they were not a good seller.

There is one for sale on e-Bay, and I found some other references to the SST prop by doing a Google search for "sst propeller."

If you have an application where you keep your prop in the water all the time, maybe you could get one covered by electro-plating with copper. Barnacles hate copper, and it is durable.

    Regards,

    Dan

  2. Can't help with an actual answer but I've always looked at things like this as...if the manufacturer's thought it to be viable and worthwhile they'd offer it up to make the $$$ off it.

    Good luck!
