Tegan Weston confounds Marianne Loh in Women’s Singles tie of Division 2-Slazenger Cup 2012
Canterbury’s Tegan Weston enthralled Marianne Loh and fetched a vital match point for her team in Division 2-Slazenger Cup at Hamilton, New Zealand on August 10, 2012.
Both shuttlers consumed their energies in three exhausting sets to read final result of 18-21, 23-21 and 21-19.
Marianne Loh, who was representing Big Brand Leisure, frittered away a golden opportunity of a straight-set victory and let the vital points slip from her hands in ending two sets.
On the other hand, the victorious shuttler showed great fighting spirit and saved the honour while she was hanging by a thread to stay alive.
The opening game set the overall tempo of the match as both contenders strived hard to gain an early advantage.
In the first half, Marianne made swift progress by pocketing valuable points in a row but the opposing shuttler intercepted her with a strong reply and counter-balanced the situation.
They remained toe-to-toe until the announcement of mid-game break and then made this contest memorable by putting a commendable show of skills in later part of the game.
However, Marianne proved herself superior in crucial moments and wrapped the first set with a favourable margin of 21-18.
The next game turned in to the best part of the tussle as both contenders made every effort to achieve their respective goals.
At one stage, Marianne was in strong position to transform her 1-0 lead into a straight-set victory but then her challenger showed elevated craft and brought the contest to the right balance.
Though, Tegan Weston remained at lower end in most part of the game but she managed to bag few well-timed points in the end and levelled the match score.
There were three times when both players reached at game point situation and squandered their effort. This race ended when Tegan clinched the last two points of 23-21 total.
The third set was also played in same manner as they snapped each other’s heels throughout the decider and match kept swinging between them until the Canterbury campaigner registered a decisive figure of 21-19.
This win provided her team-mates the required momentum but they could not capitalise on it and faced a 7-9 defeat.
