Teixeiras brace pushes the Yankees past the Tigers in a fiery bout
In a match that saw two sides lock horns, things got a bit out of hand when pitchers from both teams got hits on batters and complicated a simple competitive contest. Both ball clubs were on even standings, in terms of wins and losses in the series. Entering the third game was on stake. The ranking in the league divisions was just one issue to deal with. The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers were contesting for pride and honour.
The Yankees went into the match with a win over the Tigers in their previous fixture. With Alex Rodriguez still out injured with a calf problem, the team was now dependent on its remaining roster to perform and get the team out of the game with a victory. Being on even standings with the Tampa Bay Rays, Manager Joe Garrido was looking for a game win lead again. And if that didn’t happen, a win was a must. Sabathia had gotten the win for the Yanks in the last game and now, being without Andy Pettitte, it was up to the fill in pitcher David Moseley, to bring the victory home. The pitcher threw for 5 innings, allowing five hits and four runs. Don Kelly hit the player for a two run homer, as well. The ball thrower was able to strike out 2, while walking two players.
The Tigers were also looking for a breather and their standing in the table was less than satisfactory for the management. Jeremy Bonderman featured this time in the fixture. However, his performance lacked any spark to win the game for the team as the ball thrower went for 7 runs and 6 hits, while walking 3 players and striking out 3.
The game jump started with Mark Teixeira, who pushed the scoring trend forth in the bottom 1st when he slammed a 2-run 381 feet homer to the right for the Yankees’ first 2 runs. Brett Gardner got the free sprint to the last base as Teixeira followed. Bonderman had a bad day ahead as Robinson Cano followed up with Teixeira with a 364-feet homer to the right. This brought up 2 runs for the Yankees and opened up the match for the Yankee Stadium fans. Miguel Cabrera responded for the Tigers in the top 2nd. The top class hitter banged a 410-feet homer to the left and decreased the deficit, altogether. It wasn’t till the top 4th when Cabrera swung back into action, as he dealt Moseley with a 375-homer to the right. The scores were now even on 2 each, but the home team was just getting into the game.
When the bottom 4th session came into play, the Yankees released a bust of energy as Austin Kearns scored off Ramiro Pena’s triple to the deep right centre. Brett Gardner doubled to the deep left centre afterwards, to get Pena through with the 5th run for the home team. Brett Gardner followed with the score as Cabrera and Ramon Santiago piled up on errors to get the basemen to move up the diamond by two bases each. The day moved into the middle session of the game as Don Kelly banged a 2-run 367 feet homer to the right, getting himself and Alex Avila on the scoring sheet, in the top 5th.
Curtis Granderson extended the Yankees’ lead in the bottom 5th as his 373-feet homer to the right increased the aggregate score tally to 4 Detroit – 7 New York. Things would mum down till the bottom 7th when the Yanks prolonged their lead as Teixeira and Nick Swisher scored two runs off Kearns’ ground rule double to the deep-left centre. The game was now taken away from the Tigers who were left in tatters.
However, the last Detroit run came from Cabrera again, who ran past the last base off Brandon Inge’s sacrifice fly to the left. The game ended on 5 Tigers – 9 Yankees.
The game ended in the favour for the Yankees but the series still hangs in the balance. With Cabrera and Teixeira high on form, the last fixture on Thursday will be a mesmerising encounter to look forward to.
