Question:

Telcel dealer in Cancun?

Are there any Telcel dealers in the Cancun airport? If so, where in the airport are they? Would it be substantially cheaper to wander around the city looking for one? I just need a SIM card for a cell phone, and I've heard that they cost between 8-20 USD...I'm sure Cancun is more expensive, but would it still be worth it to buy it there?

  1. There is no Telcel kiosk at the airport, and I think you might be dissapointed if you buy a SIM there anyway, as the cost of calling this way is not cheap. Calls to the US using Telcel pre-paid is $2 per minute. The better way to get Telcel service at a far better price (and you won't have to search the city for a Telcel dealer, only to find that they don't - or maybe won't -  speak English) is to rent a phone from Mexitel Cellular. They send the phone to you before you leave and their rates are $1 per call to the US and 50 cents to any other Telcel phone anywhere in Mexico.

  2. Even for inside the country you are better off with a rental. The rental place referred to in the post above charges 50 cents per call to any other Telcel phone in the entire country. When you buy a SIM on your own it will cost at least 35 cents per minute to call anyone local and twice that much to call someone in another city in Mexico. Also, when you buy a SIM cards your phone still won't receive calls until you get registered and that alone can take up to a week, so unless you want pay big $$ per minute to use a semi-functional phone, I'd say the advice you already got is pretty good.
