Question:

Telekinesis question?

How is it that some people can move things with their mind? I've seen videos on youtube and I know last year there was a featured news story about a man who could break wooden boards just by staring at them. Is it possible for someone to train themselves to become telekinetic?

  1. Telekinesis (TK) is now called Psychokinesis (PK) in the scientific research literature. Despite the misinformation constantly posted by YA debunks evidence for psychokinesis has been demonstrated at statistically significant levels by thousands of individuals over thousands of experiments (many of them repeated) and I have provided links for you below.

Unfortunately research has focused almost exclusively on proof oriented experiments and not on process (what happens and how) oriented research. PK lags years behind ESP research in process oriented experiments.

There has been some speculation that entanglement (via physics) may play a role since it appears to be easier to effect objects in a state of flux (dice still rolling, random number generators, etc.) then it is to effect objects already at rest.

Dean Radin (link below) explores this in his books "Conscious Universe" and "Entangled Minds".

There is not yet a good theory (or test) of how it might work.

On a very few and rare occasions I find myself agreeing with YA debunkers. I would agree that You Tube is not a good source of information to provide evidence. It can very easily be faked via the wonders of digital photography and computer editing. News stories also often report "interest pieces" in that they might not believe a person reporting that he was abducted (or whatever) but find that people might be interested enough to watch the news cast in order to see the story. Some news (60 minutes, 20/20, etc. do a better job at checking facts before airing a story and often try to present balanced presentations). However, the news is not the same as a peer reviewed science journal (where most of PK research has been published).

It might be possible (since no one has conducted any experiments one way or the other) for someone to train themselves to be able to use psychokinesis. However no system has ever been experimentally tested so none of them have evidence that they enhance PK.

  2. No, I don't think it's possible.  If they happen to have some footage of them using their "telekinetic powers", then they're probably using some timed, self-triggering mechanism. It's only believed to happen in science fiction and in scientology...no offense to scientologists.

  3. its a magic trick or special effects. They dont really move things with thier mind.

nobody in history has been able to demonstrate telekinesis in even the smallest amount under controlled conditions.

If they had, it would be an open and legit branch of science

  4. You've been fooled, telekinesis is not possible.Believe none of what you hear and maybe half of what you see.On the Internet even less.

  5. ya, telekinesis really has never been proven and probably never will. the guy with the boards was probably using some sort of illusion, and i know that the guy with the spoons actually trained himself to use his thumbs so that others couldn't see him bending the spoons.

i suppose you could train yourself to be a stage magician, which is actually the same thing.

  6. It is not. No one has proved jack c**p in a controlled situation - there are several money prizes to whoever can prove their powers. Stage magic is not proof.

  7. of COURSE not!

Don't believe everything you see on the internet...

  8. Well, the short answer is that they can't, at least as far as they can demonstrate. Youtube is not a source for documented, credible evidence of any kind. Despite the egregious misinformation constantly posted by YA paranormal evangelists, evidence for telekinesis (or psychokinesis or PK) is very limited and and pretty much ignored as bad science by the rest of the scientific community, and for good reason. While some may claim that PK has been "demonstrated at statistically significant levels by thousands of individuals over thousands of experiments (many of them repeated)", a thousand badly designed, badly performed and badly analyzed experiments don't sum up to one good experiment, and the statistical significance mentioned above is at best debatable, at worst laughable.

I've included a link below which is heavily documented. You'll find it entertaining reading. I especially like the part about J.B. Rhine being totally bamboozled by a trained horse!

  9. nah i don't think it's true just special effects people use on the videos.. =p

  10. They can't.  Don't believe everything you see on youtube, or even anything having to do with 'science' that you see on the new.  The news is out for entertainment value only, and rarely if ever check up to make sure they are correct in their stories.  No one has ever been able to demonstrate telekinesis under controlled circumstances (that means, when they were stopped from cheating).  If they were, there'd be a whole field of science devoted to it.  And there isn't.  And this guy would be out a million bucks.  http://www.randi.org  But he isn't.

  11. I rember once seeing a story about a guy that bent forks and spoons with ease and almost instantly. He held a contast via internet and had a web cam on a spoon and to have people try to bend it and if the noticed anything report it. Never found out who won but yes i suppose its possible.

  12. None of these stand up to even the slightest scrutiny, regrettably.  No-one has ever been able to demonstrate any telekinetic abilities on even the smallest object.
