I have two Telephone sockets. One upstairs, and a main one downstairs. And wish to attach the upstairs one to the master so that i can use the phone upstairs. But On the master socket. There is a separate part that comes out after unscrewing it and it has a connection to the actual master, and 4 spaces for wires. Numbered 2 - 5. Do i just connect the wires 2 - 5 to this and then it should work?

  1. Since your house had been pre-wired all you have to do is plug in your other telephone upstairs and it should work. There was no need for you to open the wall socket.

  2. If there is already a cable connected to the terminals on the removable plate, then your extension jack upstairs is probably already connected.

If not, then yes, you need to run the cable from the terminals on the back of the plate to the matching terminal numbers on the extension jack.  The standard code is:

    2  Blue/white

    3  Orange/white

    4  White/orange

    5  White/blue

These are main color first, color of bands second (i.e. blue/white means the wire which is mostly blue with white bands).   Terminal 4 is not actually needed for a single residential line, but it's usual to connect it for neatness anyway.

    Information applies to U.K.
