Telephone Testing?

Hello everyone,

Sorry for this stupid question, I have never used any device like this before.

I recently got a "Butt Set" also called "Lineman's Handset" which uses two alligator like clips. for testing phone lines.

My question is, after removing the face plate of my phone jack where do I connect the 2 alligator clips? To the wires? or to the metal connectors inside the jack?

The manual doesn't cover any of this, It's a Harris TS22 Lineman Telephone

Please explain!

  1. To the red and green or to the black and yellow wires or screws. Either will do. Each set is a different line, and you may have some other weird combination or colors, but that's the standard.

  2. anyone with a TS22, it is assumed you know how to find tip and ring.

    tip is the green wire

    ring is the red wire

just clip onto the screws.. or you can... --- I cannot believe I am going to say this --- you can use the bed of nails on the popper clip, to clip onto the wire directly. The bed of nails will pierce the wire insultation.

DO NOT do this on outside wireing, you pierce the plastic insultation and moisture will enter the jacket and corrode the wire.

  3. If you need to ask, you shouldn't be using a butt set.

  4. Usually the s***w heads where the wires s***w down.
