  1. Interesting question:

Positives:  They hold the lines that carry communications of all types.  Communication is key for a society to continue to operate.

Negatives: In my area of the country telephone poles are treated wood, either with creosote or green treated.  By all accounts, both of those treatments are hazardous.  You can't burn either of those types treated poles.   In some other areas of the country I've seen concrete and metal poles, I imagine that they are more expensive, but probably better in the long run.

Telephone poles are also a frequent 'target' of people who end up in the ditches up here in the northern climates when the roads are slippery.

I hope that answers part of your question.

  2. you know, what I'm always sort of getting angry about when I see them hammering another one into the ground? That they don't go through with it, I mean, do YOU leave a nail sticking 3/4 out of a shelf??? No, you don't. See? So why don't they hammer them in all the way? Would save a lot of cable, too, for sure...

    ;)

  3. It means my cell phone works, who cares about the negatives.......
