  1. I agree with Square eyes. you need a Filter in every socket that you have a phone plugged into, the hiss comes from the adsl. The filter separates the phone line from the adsl signal. The 1st answer (KMFF) refers to American installations where they have an external test point. These are just being provided in the UK on new properties. If you don't have adsl follow the instructions on page 5 of your phone book using a know working corded phone.


  2. That problem could be caused by any number of things. Before you call the telephone company go ahead and replace your handset cord (if it is not a cordless) and your line cord. If the problem is still happening then take a phone out to the telephone box on the outside of your house (the one attached to your house). There is a plug in the box for testing purposes. Plug  your phone into that plug and if there is still "hissing" then it is your carrier's problem and call them to report the trouble. Good luck.

    At the socket it should be>>> socket, filter, phone in that order.
