Question:

Telephone scams in Australia?

I am on the "do not call list."

The scammers now call with a recorded message telling me to "Press 9 for more details."

Naturally, since I don't "press 9" I have no idea who has made the call and can't report them, even if I wanted to.

Is there any way to trace such calls, or is there a Government Department that can handle complaints like this.

  1. Not being in Australia or familiar with the phone companies there (or the law), this is pretty much a guess.

As I see this, the recorded announcement must come from somewhere. I think the announcement is in fact from the advertising company PABX / Computer / Whatever.

My advise is to Press 9 and speak to whoever to find out the name of the company calling you  and tell the operator to remove your phone number from the list or you will make a formal complaint. They may say you initiated the call, but technically this is incorrect as call originated from their PABX / Computer system and you answered the phone call. Regardless of whatever happened after you answered the phone, the phone company will regard the call as having "originated" (i.e. come = they are paying for the call) from them and not from you.
